Xylitol is not only present in sugarless gum and peanut butter but also in supplements such as melatonin, which many people use for sleep aid. Tina Wismer, a senior director at the Animal Poison Control Center of the ASPCA, notes that ingestion of xylitol by dogs can result in symptoms like vomiting and seizures. In 2024 alone, the center received over 10,000 calls related to xylitol poisoning in dogs, with more than 250 originating from Arizona. Wismer stresses the importance of reading product labels carefully and keeping these items out of reach of pets. Despite the risks, no current food products carry warnings about the toxicity of xylitol to dogs, making this legislation even more critical.
